philosophy - collaborative vision

Recording can be a pain, and technology is a two edged sword. It can drain your energy or provide the catalyst that makes art.

I believe that unleashing “The Performance” – the one inside you – is the prime directive. No one wants to listen to a great recording of a boring, nervous, or stressed-out artist. Okay, a pair of Neumanns and some hyper-cool software plug-ins can help. Use the best technology available and keep it in its place.

My goal is to ensure that you are able to give the best performance possible and present it in a pristine acoustic environment. It takes some skill, maybe even a little magic, to use state-of-the-art equipment and then erase its presence, leaving nothing behind but the connection between you and the listener.

But that connection is the real magic.

recording

  • From award-winning audiophile recordings to basic 2-track editing
  • More than twenty years of experience in studio and location recording:
  • Everything from solo voice to large choral, orchestral, bluegrass, jazz, and big band.
  • Highest quality state-of-the-art DSD and PCM digital recording
  • High resolution, live mix to two-track and multi-track
  • Super Audio CD, Stereo and surround
  • Maintaining the highest possible quality signal chain from microphones to preamps to A to D conversion guarantees final recordings of the highest qualilty
  • I believe in recording and preserving the music at the highest resolutions for as long as possible. To that end I offer multi-track recording up to 24-bit/192kHz, and up to 8 channels of Direct Stream Digital (DSD). DSD is a new recording formulation that must be heard to be believed. It is phenomenal. Check out sacd/dsd on the web site and click on the following links: (Artegra) and (Sony SACD).

studio recording

There are a lot of studios, some pretty good. Picking one depends on the project. I tend to use the best, sparingly, and do as much as possible at my own production studio. (No big clock on the wall so it’s easier on the budget as well as a great listening/mixing room that’s a little more relaxed. Take a walk through the woods, feed the chickens…)

remote recording

(great rooms - no studios)
For some types of music it's the only way to go. All my recording gear is portable - both the DSD and the PCM multitracks - so I can offer as much horsepower as anyone in town. But in this world, experience and finesse count for more than muscle.

Multi-channel (up to 24) PCM at up to 192 kHz 24-bit plus 16 channels DSD available.

I also live mix down to 2-track, if on a budget, at any/all hi-res standards.

producing

Great ears. Lots of experience. I can help you think through and organize the important bits and pieces so that the fun stuff happens without the blood and mess.

writing

I've written, produced, and directed award-winning documentaries, and straight and humorous pieces, as well as a lot of just plain funny bits. Everything from ear candy to the kitchen sink. Visit the "listenables" page.

My equipment list is small and distinguished. I believe in using only the best and expand to fit project needs.
